It came to my attention last week that Chris and I own more than one SNES system. I’m not even sure how this happened, but there you have it. I thought the system was someone else’s, and was just hanging out at our house for awhile because we’re cool. I was recently informed that we own it.
It was then suggested to me that we use this extra console to make a handheld SNES. This is obviously an awesome idea, whether or not we ever get around to it. I’ve been tinkering around with the specifics in my head all week, and I think the most difficult part will be the housing. In any case, contemplating my own fun console mod reminded me of something I saw online a long time ago called “Yoshi’s Box”. Some astoundingly brave individual cracked open 5 consoles and somehow jammed them all into one case that also happened to contain a kick ass (at the time) PC. I remember drooling over the idea at the time, and even now I kind of wish I had one. The problem with mods like this is that the cooler the mod, the more expensive it is, and the more likely you are to break something. If I bust up an old SNES that just fell out of the sky into my house one day, that’s fine. If I chopped up 6 consoles and couldn’t put them back together, I’d be pretty upset.
While googling the Yoshi’s Box specifics, I came across a lot of other pretty sweet mods, so I thought I’d share. Completionist.com readers are busy people, and may not have unlimited time to search through random crap on the internet. So without further ado, here are 5 that I think are pretty freakin’ cool.
1- Yoshi’s Box
Atari 2600, NES, Gamecube, Xbox, Playstation 2, and a PC made to rip through the best games of 2002. I remember a time you couldn’t turn around without seeing a picture of this thing online somewhere, but apparently not anymore. If you find a good one, feel free to link to it, otherwise, it doesn’t take a lot of imagination to know that 5 consoles and a PC in one box looks amazing.
2 – Game Man
This basically speaks for itself. Note the giant 8 lb cartridge.
3 –Zelda Wii
There were quite a few Wii case mods out there, but this one is my favourite. It almost got beat out by a Mario Galaxy mod, but the stone-like texture on this one is just too awesome.
Along with case mods, the idea of taking a large console and making it portable is pretty popular. In my opinion, this is the best one by a long shot. If someone actually released a portable Dreamcast, I’d have a hard time not buying it.
5 –PSPBoy
Last, but not least, a PSP jammed into an old Gameboy case. I’m not sure how great this is, especially since it’s generally accepted to be a fake, but I have to respect that if it was real, it would be really hard to do, and if it’s fake, it’s still a pretty funny idea.
These are just 5 of the mods that I found while slacking off at work. There were also some good ones that involved taking a broken console and turning it into something else. Like an original Gameboy that’s actually an optical mouse. Or a Sega Genesis made into a guitar.
If you stumble upon any others you think are really neat, link them. I never get tired of looking at what people smarter than me do with their time and money.

I don’t know if this counts as a proper mod, but I am deeply in love with this Victorian steampunk
laptop.
I say instead of modding the SNES, you give it to some handsome, smart, and funny male that is dating your sister… Just a thought?
Zelda Wii mod really, all he did was glue a couple of LEDs on the outside and put the crest on it, now the dreamcast mod, that’s hardcore.
Also google Ben Heckendorn for his series of mods turning current gen systems such as an Xbox 360 and Wii into laptops. Very cool!
Space Prince, that laptop is hella slick!
