NHL 08 Dilemma
By Chris

Julie and I had a successful Easter weekend of gaming. We got through all the titles we wanted and with the extra time I had to myself on Monday I popped NHL 08 into the PS3. Whenever Julie’s not around it’s not uncommon to find me playing a sports franchise, whether I’m getting my ass handed to me as the State University of New York at Stoneybrook Seawolves in College Hoops 2K7 or duking it out as a welterweight in Fight Night: Round 3. Seeing as how the hockey playoffs are just around the corner, I thought it appropriate to spend some time with the New York Islanders.

Since the trade deadline recently passed, I thought EA would surely have provided a roster update. Upon checking, I found that they had (if a little late) and promptly downloaded it. While scouring through the new player line-ups, I was suddenly faced with a dilemma. What the hell do I do now?

You see, my beloved Islanders and I have already spent countless hours together building a dynasty that is sure to last through the ages. Other teams cower as they see the blue and orange approaching on their schedules and dread the day they have to play against the greatest show on ice. However, the roster update does not apply to a dynasty already in progress. The reasoning is obvious. In dynasty mode, you act as the general manager for the team, signing and trading players as you go. Other non-player controlled GMs in the game also make trades, so arbitrarily resetting the roster half-way through the season seems unfair. While I was sculpting my team on the PS3, things changed in real life. Players have been traded, released, retired, or in the case of Alexei Yashin, disappeared much to my content. So now I’m stuck with a team that looks almost nothing like the roster that actually currently suits up for the Isles. This is true for most of the teams in the league since the original rosters were set way back in the summer before the season even started. So, this is my dilemma…

Should I scrap my dynasty in progress and start over using the now more accurate team? Your comments are appreciated…

Well, I would say don’t scrap it. If you did, it kind of eliminates the purpose of the mode of play you are using (as you said in your post). Finish with the team you built, then start over with the most current roster! =)
